Slavery, Slaveholding and the Free Black Population of Antebellum Baltimore 2015
In antebellum Baltimore, slavery, slaveholding, and a large free Black population coexisted, supported by the city’s port and location as a hub between North and South. The city was a major port for the Atlantic wheat trade, which supported its slave-based economy, and its position made it a destination for both enslaved people seeking freedom and slaveholders who hired out their enslaved workers. Baltimore had the largest free Black community in antebellum America, which provided shelter for fugitives and also faced economic competition and exploitation from white residents who often exploited their precarious legal status.
